Clay Club October

Service Description

Clay Club Clay club is for folks who are interested in having dedicated weekly play time with clay. Students can have a project in mind, or choose to simply come and see where their imagination leads them. We will have a number of projects to choose from. While this month long session is primarily independent studio time, our clay instructor, Debbie Carlos, will be there to guide and teach basic techniques that will help students execute their project/s. This is a month long session - enough time for students to make a few small projects or focus on one larger one. No previous experience with clay is required, but some experience is helpful. One 25 lb bag of white stoneware clay, basic clay tools, underglazes and glaze will be provided. Students are allowed to bring their own tools, and to source their own glaze but must run it by the instructor first. This course is a pre-requisite to joining our open clay studio membership. Schedule: Clay Club will meet every Thursday from 6pm-9pm, with the last 10-20 minutes dedicated to clean up. Week 1 - At the beginning of class, the instructor will give new students a run down of the equipment available to use. Instructor will then do a demo on how to throw on the pottery wheel to students who are interested in learning. We will only have 4 wheels available and is first come first serve. Students will start formulating projects and start to work. Week 2 - At the beginning of class, the instructor will do another demo on the pottery wheel for students who did not get a chance to do it during week 1. Students will continue to form work and make finishing touches, getting pieces ready to dry. We will also have a free slip casting demo led by Kaity Hemgesberg. This free demo is also open to the public so bring a friend! Students can opt to continue to work on their own project instead of participating in the demo. Week 3 Lab week - Lab is for finishing work made in the previous two classes. Students may start a new project only if they can finish it at the end of class. Otherwise, Lab is for trimming wheel-thrown pieces and preparing pieces to go into their first kiln cycle (bisque). Week 4 - Students will paint and/or glaze their bisqued pieces. Pieces will then be fired a final time and students will be notified when their work is ready to be picked up, generally in 2-3 weeks.
