Service Description

Clay club is for folks who are interested in some open play time with clay. Students can have a project in mind, or choose to simply come and see where their imagination leads them. While this month-long session is primarily independent studio time, our clay instructor, Kaity Hemgesberg, will be there to guide and teach basic techniques that will help students build their project. This is a month-long session - enough time for students to make a few small projects or focus on one larger one. No previous experience with clay is required, but some experience can be helpful. One 12 lb bag of white stoneware clay, basic clay tools, underglazes and glaze will be provided. Students are allowed to bring their own tools, and to source their own glaze but must run it by the instructor first. If they so wish, students will also be allowed to slip cast 1 item of their choosing from a selection of molds provided on day 2 (due to the time needed for this process, choices will be limited to a selection that can be poured and demolded within the allotted class time). This course is a pre-requisite to joining our open clay studio membership. Please note, wheel throwing will not be taught this month. However, students are allowed to use the pottery wheels only if they already know how to use it. Schedule: Clay Club will meet every Tuesday in the month of November from 6pm-9pm, with the last 10-20 minutes dedicated to clean up. Week 1 11/3 - At the beginning of class, the instructor will give new students a run down of the equipment available to use as well as handbuilding basics. Students will begin formulating projects and start to work. Week 2 11/10 - Students will continue to form work and make finishing touches to week 1 projects and can start new ones that they can finish during week 3. In addition to the handbuilding guidance, a plaster mold slip casting/press mold demo is included in addition to some hands on experience where interested. Week 3 Lab week 11/17 - Lab is for finishing work made in the previous two classes. Students may start a new project only if they can finish it by the end of class. Otherwise, Lab is for trimming any wheel-thrown or slip cast pieces and preparing them to go into their first kiln cycle (bisque). Week 4 12/1- Students will paint and/or glaze their bisqued pieces. Pieces will then be fired a final time and students will be notified when their work is ready to be picked up, generally in 2-3 weeks. NOTE: There will be NO Clay

Cancellation Policy

If you must cancel your reservation, please do so as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we are unable to issue refunds or move students to a different class time for scheduling conflicts . The number of people asking to move their reservations is simply too high that the school can not afford to accommodate this and still keep class fees affordable. We do occasionally have a waitlist for classes, if someone is able to take your place you can be refunded or moved to a different class. Feel free to ask but again this is not guaranteed. Alternatively if you can not make it to your scheduled class you can always find someone you know to take your place. If you would like to cancel your reservation, please email tinybitofwood@gmail.com with the subject line “Cancellation”. Thank you for understanding, Megan Shannon
